[R&E] UC Davis Mental Health Conference 2018

This is the second UC Davis Mental Health Conference organized by the ASUCD! The event aims to bring awareness to mental health issues that students face as well as the necessary resources that should be implemented and improved. We will be hosting a booth in the resource corner. Interns who sign up for this event will work together to create and present a tri-fold board on depression. Interns will also complete two dry-runs prior to the event.

[R&E] PAC Outreach #1

PAC stands for Patient Advocate Community. In collaboration with the Vietnamese School of Mary Help of Christians Center, interns will educate high school students about prevalent health issues in the Vietnamese community. Interns will also help students learn new Vietnamese words relating to the topic and provide translation practices.

This event is launch of the PAC program! You will assist our Team Leader, Tu Nguyen, to become familiar the project and gain ideas of how you could be an educator of PAC in the future. Participants will receive 0.5 credits.

[R&E] Play for Thought: Sunscreen

Play for Thought is a program made in collaboration with the Davis Community Libraries. This program consists of a series of events which aim to instill the idea of a healthy-lifestyle in elementary aged children through hands-on activities. There are two roles you may sign up for. Presenters will earn 1 R&E credit (6 hours of transcript notation) and are expected to present a PowerPoint on the general topic and activity. Regular volunteers will earn 0.5 R&E credits and are expected to assist in organizing the attendees and contribute to educating them on the topic of the day.

Sunscreen: The weather is getting dreary but that doesn't mean we should stop wearing sunscreen! At this event, we will be teaching the importance of wearing sunscreen even when it's not sunny. We will be making diy sunscreen and the children will get to decorate their own sunscreen container. We will also explain the contents of sunscreen, which ingredients do what, and why some commercial sunscreens can be harmful.

For this VICE event, you will create a presentation in English regarding this month's topic. You will also teach Vietnamese words relating to the topic and provide translation practices. You will meet with a VICE advisor to prepare the Vietnamese terms, and will work closely with your Team Leader during 2 dry runs to prepare for the presentation.

[R&E] Debate

Come take on your fellow R&E interns in a battle of wits and critical thinking. You will be split into two teams of three and debate over a preselected topic. This event involves an intense amount of research that is done before the actual debate, so be prepared! Due to the intensity of this event, the winners of the debate earn 2 R&E credits (the losing team still receives 1 credit). The winners are chosen by the panel of judges, based on the structure and overall effectiveness of their arguments.

Participants will be required to attend 1 mini-workshop before the event.

Stebbins Cold Canyon Loop Hiking Trip

Have you ever hoped to hike through nature smelling the flowers and being one with nature? And further mentally and physically push yourself so that you have something to be proud of? Then this social is the one for you! We will be hiking the Homestead Trail and there will be rocks and obstacles but as long as we do it together then we will make it to the top with a sense of achievement and great pictures to post on social media.

[PR] 11/12 Health Fair

What: Sacramento Vietnamese Medical, Dental, Pharmacy Association (SVMDPA) to provide Hepatitis B outreach at their upcoming health fair. You will be translating and filling new patient charts!

[R&E] Practical

What: Interns will be tested on the information given to them at orientation. Please be prepared for a written test (based off information found in Intern Handbook) and vitals. Interns will also work with their teams to create a presentation on a pre-selected topic and will present to the entire R&E internship.

Where: Wellman TBA

Attire: Business Casual

What to Bring: Snacks, laptop, etc.

Credits: 0.5 R&E credits 

**Lunch will be provided!**

[PR] 11/11 Davis Community Meals

Davis Community Meals are happening once again! You will be assisting with the cooking and preparation of the meal, setting up the dining room, serving the food and finally, cleaning up the dining hall and kitchen after the meal.

When: Saturday, November 11th

Where: 640 Hawthorne Lane

Attire: VN CARES apparel, nice jeans or shorts (no rips or distress), close-toed shoes

Please show up on time with proper attire. Strikes will be enforced.

November 11th Saturday Clinic - Primary Care Clinic

Hello Clinical Interns,

Thank you for signing up for Saturday clinic! 

Please be aware that we can only take 2 interns for this Saturday clinic.

If you cancel without finding a replacement, you must notify us 48 hours before clinic starts. If you can find a replacement, you are able to cancel after the 48 hours deadline. 

If you register or cancel after the confirmation email has been sent, you must notify the VN CARES Co-D. FAILURE TO NOTIFY US WILL RESULT IN A STRIKE.

Please remember the following when signing up for clinic:

Interns are required to complete 4 clinics.

Dress Code: Gray clinic T-shirt with nice jeans (no holes) OR Business Casual (if you do not have the clinic t-shirt yet); closed-toe shoes

Carpool: Self-arranged!

Present to your fellow VN CARES interns during the R&E Meeting. You can present on the topic of your choice as long as it is either health or science related. This is a great opportunity to hone your skills as a researcher and as a presenter. You will work closely with your Team Leader during 2 dry runs in order to prepare for your presentation.

Topic: Your choice! We just ask that it’s something health or science related.
