[R&E] Play for Thought: How to Not Get Sick

Play for Thought is a program made in collaboration with the Davis Community Libraries. This program consists of a series of events which aim to instill the idea of a healthy-lifestyle in elementary aged children through hands-on activities. There are two roles you may sign up for. Presenters will earn 1 R&E credit (6 hours of transcript notation) and are expected to present a PowerPoint on the general topic and activity. Regular volunteers will earn 0.5 R&E credits and are expected to assist in organizing the attendees and contribute to educating them on the topic of the day. The credit will go towards your winter quarter requirements.

How to Not Get Sick: We will have a presentation on how to prevent yourself from getting sick during this cold, winter season. For the activity, the kids will be carving soap with sticks and other tools.

Winter Retreat

It's nearing that time of year, the event that I know you've all been waiting for: Winter Retreat! Come bond with your VN CARES family at this fun-filled 3 day, 2 night trip. [PR] 12/8 Food Recovery Network

**NOTE: Please read this information carefully, as this event is different from our usual PR events**

We will collaborating with Food Recovery Network again! You will be assisting them at 2 different locations, which are separated into 2 different shifts that you can sign up for on Evenbrite. You can sign up for either both shifts (transportation is self-provided; biking will take around 5 minutes), or whichever shift that’s more assessible for you if you can’t come to both.

You will first help loading up the Yolo Food Bank truck in Central Park parking lot with produce from Farmer’s Market. Afterward, you will move to Solano Park Community Center (Building 2500) to help with bagging those produce and distribute them to families and people in need.

When: Saturday, 12/8/18
Times & Locations: 

  • Shift 1 (1:00PM - 1:30PM): Central Park, Davis

  • Shift 2 (1:30PM - 3:00PM): 2500 Solano Park, Davis

Attire: VN CARES attire, nice jeans or shorts (No ripped or distressed), close-toed shoes.

[R&E] Play for Thought: Elephant Toothpaste

Play for Thought is a program made in collaboration with the Davis Community Libraries. We will be making Elephant Toothpaste with the SPOT kids (3rd through 6th graders) using containers, hydrogen peroxide, yeast, water, liquid dish soap, food coloring, and safety goggles. A detailed email will be sent out a few days before the event. Volunteers will earn 0.5 R&E credits. You are expected to know the steps of the activity and to assist the kids in making the elephant toothpaste.

[PR] 11/11 UOP Health Fair

Our sister chapter at the University of Pacific's Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is hosting their annual Pacific Outreach Health Fair in Sacramento. 

They are looking for interested volunteers like you to help make this event a success. They are in need of Vietnamese translators to help facilitate communication between the Health Fair guests and their faculty. In addition, we will be hosting a booth to advertise for our clinic, and we are in need of 3 volunteers to help talk to the Health Fair guests about the services we provide at clinic. [R&E] Meeting Presentation #2

Present to your fellow VN CARES interns during the R&E Meeting. You can present on the topic of your choice as long as it is either health or science related. This is a great opportunity to hone your skills as a researcher and as a presenter. You will work closely with your Team Leader during 2 dry runs in order to prepare for your presentation.

 

Attire: Business Casual

Topic: Your choice! We just ask that it’s something health or science related.

Dixon Corn Maze

Fun fact: Dixon corn maze is one of the biggest corn mazes in the world - over 40 acres! Come out to this social if you’re up for the challenge and want to solve this fun puzzle with your VN CARES friends. Also, please sign up using the link below if you can provide rides or need a ride!

Also the maze does have a small admission fee ($14) which you can pay to our treasurer (cash or venmo) the day of.
